Electronic Arts will remove the ability to play as a member of the Taliban for the upcoming shooter Medal of Honor.
According to Greg Goodrich, executive producer of Medal of Honor, they have taken complaints very seriously.
“This is a voice that has earned the right to be listened to. It is a voice that we care deeply about,” said Goodrich.
Out of “respect and reverence” for American and Allied soldiers, they will call the multiplayer forces which are against the US military the “opposing force.”
“While this change should not directly affect gamers, as it does not fundamentally alter the gameplay, we are making this change for the men and women serving in the military and for the families of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice – this franchise will never wilfully disrespect, intentionally or otherwise, your memory and service,” said Goodrich.
Medal of Honor came under pressure after it revealed it would let players take on the role of the Taliban as a multiplayer option.
The Commanding General of the Army and Air-Force Exchange services said he would remove Medal of Honor from US military bases worldwide because of the inclusion of Taliban player characters.
The UK Defence Secretary Dr Liam Fox was also shocked at their inclusion.
“At the hands of the Taliban, children have lost fathers and wives have lost husbands,” he told the BBC.
Goodrich said the removal of the Taliban option was in response to the “friends and family of fallen soldiers.”
